RadiSense® the unique field strength probe for EM fields to 1.000 V/m and 4 GHz
To perform accurate field strength measurements, the probe must be small in relation to the wavelength of the measured signal. If probe dimensions are over-sized, it will cause resonances at higher frequencies, attributing significantly to the total measurement uncertainty. A small probe is also essential in field uniformity measurements in an anechoic chamber as one is averaging over the measurement volume. The larger the probe used in these measurements, the lower the available measurement resolution.
It is particularly during measurements in (G)TEM-cells that the dimensions of the probe determine the reliability of the measurements. When dealing with compact cells, a probe with dimensions larger than 100 mm is too large in relation to the homogeneous field in the cell and will introduce significant errors.
Reliable
Hence, in order to achieve reliable measurements, the dimensions of the probe need to be as small as possible.
Small
The introduction of the RadiSense® field strength probe puts an end to all size-related measurement problems. With a measurement volume of less than 75 cm3 (42 x 42 x 42 mm, a rigid housing 53 x 53x 53 mm including antenna covers), the probe ensures reliable measurements. In comparison, present probes perform measurements averaging over a volume ranging between 250 cm3 and 1.000 cm3, introducing substantial measurement errors.
Battery-free
Another drawback of standard field strength probes is that they are battery operated. The use of batteries is understandable, as galvanic wires would influence the measured field. However, batteries are quickly drained, and are often empty when they are most needed. A battery-free probe, for example, is particularly useful for continuous measurements as during overnight testing. Unlike others, the RadiSense® field strength probe is powered by a high power LASER, whose light is transferred to the probe through a fiber optic cable. This is converted to electrical energy inside the probe, powering the low noise amplifiers and a single chip microprocessor, which reads the antennas and communicates the measured values to a Personal Computer through a second fiber optic cable.
Software support
The RadiSense® field strength probe is supported by the RadiMation® automated EMC measurement software. The RadiMon® monitoring software is shipped along with the system, for stand-alone use. The probe can be controlled throughout most commercial available EMC software packages due to a Holaday® 4422 compatible instruction set.
Options
Also available are units with four soft keys and a matrix display (LCD) indicating isotropic value as well as separate axes. This enables stand-alone use. Another option is a standard GPIB (IEEE488) interface.
Automotive
Powered by a 12V supply, suited for stand-alone use and its high measurement range, make the RadiSense® an excellent tool for measurements in vehicles.
